Elected in 1960 as Kissimmee’s first female mayor, Jessie Lee Wilder Thacker won by a margin of 822 to 367 votes and served a one-year term.
She became a widow in 1958 with 3 young children. She pressed on as a single mom balancing career and family during a time of deep cultural change for the country. She practiced law and became the first female mayor of Kissimmee, Florida. She moved to Pinellas county and taught at St. Pete Junior College inspiring attorneys, paralegals and even some now Judges to pursue a career in the legal profession.
